The Mettler organization would like to honor its outstanding staff by implementing Department of the Month. This month honors our support staff in the areas of human resources, accounting, marketing, nutrition, wellness, and facility managment. This group includes Garrett Arndt, Mary Knight, Christy Mettler, Kacey Nelson, Julie Pellum, BJ Respondek, Joy Sheehan, Melissa Smith, and Tara Young.

Mettler will be participating in the American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk on October 5, 2008 at Crystal Lake Park in Urbana to join our community to fight back against breast cancer. The Mettler Maniacs will help to raise funds and awareness to help those facing the disease and save more lives.

Get unlimited access to the indoor basketball court at Mettler Athletic seven days a week with a Basketball Court Membership for $40 per month per person. Participants should call in advance to ensure court availability. For more information call 398-9800.

Need to gain an edge before your junior high or high school cross country season? Our Pre-Season Cross Country program is designed to prepare runners for the rigors of the cross country season. The twice weekly class focuses on injury resistance, running-specific strength, balance, coordination, flexibility, core strength and running form. The five-week program can be combined with our distance running camp.

Dates have been set for Mettler Athletic's Second Annual Distance Running Camp. This camp will prepare young runners both physically and mentally for the upcoming cross country season. Andy Derks, Mettler Athletic's Running and Racing coordinator, will direct the camp. Each day, runners will warm up, complete running and mobility drill and join us for a workout. Guest speakers appear daily. Also, this year, runners will have their form analyzed using our Dartfish video analysis system.

Athletes can now analyze their baseball, softball, golf, track, and volleyball techniques. Using state-of-the-art Dartfish Video Analysis our skill instructors will help you modify your mechanics to make you more efficient.

Baseball players who would like to receive private skill instruction at discounted rates can throughout April and May. Eddie Edwards, Mettler Athletic's skill and camp team leader, will offer private, half-hour lessons for $20.

Whole Life Marathon Training will begin June 16th. This multifaceted program will combine running, yoga, nutrition counseling, and e-coaching to help you prepare for your fall marathon or half marathon. Andy Derks, our Running and Racing coordinator, will design a training program based on your needs and help you go the distance.

Tennis Athleticism will be offered Mondays and Wednesdays from March 24–May 14. The course, taught by Carol Bobber, will be held from 4–5pm. Children ages 10–16 are encouraged to attend.

Less than two weeks before the inaugural Mettler Athletic Sports Performance Symposium on February 17, 2008. The seminar will feature Dr. Craig Horswill from the Gatorade Sports Science Institute. Acclaimed Sports Psychologist Brent Walker, PhD as well as our own Jeff Schroder, PT, MPT and Steve Young, PT, MSPT, CSCS will also be presenting. Quench your thirst for knowledge of leading sports science information and move to the next level.

Come visit us at the Children’s Health and Wellness Expo on Saturday, February 9th from 8am–12pm at the Hilton Garden Inn located at 1501 S Neil Street in Champaign. This Expo is also in benefit of CASA. CASA, or “Court Appointed Special Advocates,” is a nonprofit organization that recruits, trains, and monitors volunteers who advocate for the best interests of abused and neglected children.

For the next six months, Mettler Athletic will be home to six Champaign-Urbana Special Recreation (CUSR) athletes as they train for Special Olympics Illinois State Summer Games.

Mettler Athletic will act as the official pre- and post-weight facility for the Champaign Centennial High School Teachers The Biggest Loser contest. Thirty-six teachers will participate from January 21st through March 15th. The winner will receive a six month fitness membership.

Mettler is hosting its 5th annual New Year’s open house Tuesday, January 1st through Sunday, January 6th at both Mettler locations. Come in to tour the facility, work out for free, register for door prizes, and sample healthy snacks. If you’re ready to join save $75 off when you become a member during our open house. Open house hours are: Tuesday 10a–4p; Wednesday and Thursday 5:15a–10p; Friday 5:15a–8p; Saturday and Sunday 7a–8p.

Mettler Athletic Adopt-a-Family Free Throw Tournament winners were Matt Mettler, 9 and Younger; Zach Mettler, 10–13; Jen Ruddell, 14 and Older. Pat Johnson won the six month fitness membership raffle. The total amount raised for the family was $315. Congratulations to the winners and thanks to all who donated their time, money, and efforts for this event.

Mettler Athletic Adopt-a-Family Free Throw Tournament takes place this week. Qualifying dates are: Monday, November 19th through Wednesday, November 21st and Friday, November 23rd from 4–6pm, and Saturday, November 24th from 12–2pm. One dollar donation to participate gets you three attempts. Make two out of three and qualify for the Championship on Sunday, November 25th at 2pm. All participants will be entered into a raffle for a six month family fitness membership at Mettler Athletic. Age groups are 9 and younger, 10–13, 14 and older. The Free Throw Tournament will be a head-to-head format for each age group. Champions will receive a basketball and a trophy for their accomplishments.

Mettler Athletic hosts a free Baseball Coaches Clinic on November 4th. This clinic for all baseball coaches no matter level or experience level will cover hitting, pitching, and finding the best tournament. Learn more about this clinic and pre-register today!
